As many of you know, I'm a long time student of Perl Monks history:

with a special interest in Saints in our Book. I browse it often ... sometimes noticing interesting quirks:

As indicated here, Perl Monk BBQ arrived with us on Dec 24 1999, making him the third ever non-insider Perl monk and, hailing from Brazil, the second ever international monk! After making the first ever post in the Perl Monks Obfu section our intrepid pioneer hero stayed on for a further ten years!

Accordingly, I would love to see the legendary BBQ appear today whenever I browse Saints in our Book.

Sadly, his current XP of 2905 is just 95 shy of the 3000 required to be listed at Saints in our Book. I feel this is unfair because XP wasn't a part of this site from the start -- it was introduced by vroom on Mar 23 2000, three months after BBQ joined.

Though I could make a special plea to the PM gods to award BBQ the 95 XP required to reach sainthood, I'd find it much more satisfying if we could all honour BBQ by upvoting enough of his praiseworthy historic nodes to allow him to finally reach his richly deserved sainthood.

Let's make BBQ a saint! :)

Spent my daily allowance on this worthwile project. But with only a 33% chance of granting 1 XP per vote, this will be slow going...

Sidenote: I almost never spend ALL my daily votes. Feels weird to not have the OPTION to do any more voting.

Agreed - dropped all my votes on BBQ nodes - 59 to go!
I'm out of votes now, but only 10 more to go!

Yay, the last line in Saints in our Book now reads:

    #UserExperienceLevel WriteupsUser SinceLast Here
    736BBQ3002Curate (13)3891999-12-24 00:0914 years ago

There are now five pioneers from 1999 in Saints in our Book:

    • 1999-11-12 05:53 - vroom (Last Here: 5 years ago)
    • 1999-12-24 00:09 - BBQ (Last Here: 14 years ago)
    • 1999-12-24 11:10 - chromatic (Last Here: 40 weeks ago)
    • 1999-12-30 08:39 - mitd (Last Here: 6 years ago)
    • 1999-12-30 21:26 - Rhandom (Last Here: 5 years ago)

In terms of seniority, BBQ is second only to vroom, the primary site developer.

Thanks to all monks who helped ensure BBQ is recognized for his significant pioneering contribution to Perl Monks!

Great idea! I just spent most of my votes today on BBQ. I checked his node and his XP is now at 3015. :)

"It's not how hard you work, it's how much you get done."

      Nice!

I'm reminded of davido's recent astonishment and bewilderment on being greeted at PM login with a congratulatory message for gaining +92 XP.

Imagine the look of surprise on BBQ's face when, in the far future, he finally gets around to logging back in to Perl Monks ... and is congratulated for gaining +10,000 XP. :)

Here's hoping BBQ's return to Perl Monks is not delayed as long as the Great Prophet Zarquon. :)

Or an error messages. Not sure we ever tested for a case like this. The huge amount of XP is most likely OK (it's a small number for a computer). If his Login, Password, Profile and Settings work after a decade+ of PM changes is probably another matter entirely.

And i hope and pray to $DEITY that we don't have a bug in Newest Nodes the prevents it from limiting the amount of posts displayed. Otherwise the PM server will just STOP for everyone else while it's busy trying to load 14 years of SoPW into a single HTML page.

Votes cast and BBQ is now on Saints in Our Book in bottom place...

It does seem a slightly pointless exercise as BBQ has not visited the Monastery for 14 years but if it makes you happy eyepopslikeamosquito 😁

Do we know what became of him?
A question I often wonder when I follow a Random Node and read some wise counsel from a long-absent Monk.

Do we know what became of him?

Bod, sorry but all I've got is that BBQ moved from Sao Paulo Brazil to San Francisco some time between 2000-2005.

Unfortunately, unlike many of the other early Perl Monks, there is no BBQ user at Everything2 or Slashdot -- see Re: The First Ten Perl Monks (paco References) for how that can be useful (that is where we learnt, for example, that the legendary paco really likes "whales and really cold cheap American beer" !!! ;-).

I noticed redmist has played pool with BBQ in RL; others in these circa 2000 Perl Monks pool games include gnat, neshura, Macphisto, jcwren and zdog.

Perhaps the best chance of finding out more about BBQ is to ask (still active) PM pioneers vroom, chromatic or Ovid:

      • Re: My Perl Monks B-Day by vroom - "I'm glad BBQ posted this. I wasn't in the monastery on the 23rd since I'm at my parents house and didn't take any of my computers home. I remember exchanging e-mails with BBQ and the excitement of seeing an account being made. BBQ was the first user to create an account and stick around who didn't know me before this all started. Maybe next time I'm in CA we can party BBQ."
      • Re: Perl Monks turns 5 by Ovid - "I can't say I remember yiango but I do miss BBQ. He was fun."

Update: I was able to contact Ovid: he wishes BBQ well, but has no further information about him. Also, chromatic is back (Raku Performance Predictions Revisited 31 Aug 2023).

ask (still active) PM pioneers vroom, chromatic

5 years and 41 weeks respectively since visiting The Monastery suggests you and I have a slightly different interpretation of still active 😜
