Primarily because it works, and secondarily because I have not gone back and looked at the shortcuts for a long time.
I'll adjust the link style in future posts as needed.

I think one of the root issue is that the hosting here is provided for free.
And whenever there are problems with infrastructure the admins here have to wait for the support to react.
This has historical reasons, about 25 years ago perlmonks started as an independent project and only later began to sail under the flag of the Perl Foundation.¹
Hosting was far more expensive back then.
But if started from scratch I suppose a payed service level would be the preferred solution.
Update
1) See footer:
PerlMonks lovingly hand-crafted by Tim Vroom.
PerlMonks somehow became entangled with The Perl Foundation.

I would assume it shouldn't be that hard to move it to a faster service. | [reply] |

Wait. What? A website of this size is running on free hosting??? How in the world!? Then that's not so bad. I mean when people sign up for free hosting, they usually get the lowest quality service, because it's free. And if you start complaining, your message lands at the bottom of the list, because you're just a free user. You might not even get any customer support when you're a free user.
I pay $2.95 a month for mine to host 5 websites at https://www.100webspace.com/web-hosting/. I have done a lot of research to find the best hosting for my needs. They have PHP, Perl, and a lot of other cool stuff. In the past 3-5 years they had one outage which lasted less than 24 hours.

I've had a dreamhost service for 15 or so years and I'd be happy to put the monks on there. I think I pay around $150 per year. I've transferred backends to different servers many many times. It can be a pain, but it's nothing that can't be figured out over time. There wouldn't be a rush to switch. Just work on it until it works, then switch the IP.
