I forget where this is described in the docs, but it refers to the most recently called 'stat' results. It's handy, but a bit arcane.

I forget where this is described in the docs perldoc -f stat, search for the paragraph starting with "If stat is passed the special filehandle consisting of an underline". And the -X file tests use `stat()` as described in their introductory paragraph, which is why `-d _` uses the same special filehandle as `stat(_)` .	[reply] [d/l] [select]
