Would you still want them to have the (*) to indicate unread messages? Seems unnecessary for mostly dead wikis. It would be nice if the discussion area link got a (*) when the most recent top level comment changed or something like that.

      Yes, and I have no idea how much impact there is on that. If it's trivial, then just keep them.

        My intuition is that the impact is non-trivial. But very few users are affected, as the feature is only present in the nodelets of cabal members (iirc). Personally, I'm willing to pay the price in performance for the benefit of the feature. Maybe we should make it optional, via something in user settings?
