moz has asked for the wisdom of the Perl Monks concerning the following question:

I was wondering if anyone has installed Strawberry Perl from the .zip file instead of using the .msi? I need instructions on how to go about this. I am unsure what to do after unzipping into a directory. In the readMe it states to unzip in a directory with no spaces, cd into the directory and run the command: \perl\bin\perl.exe relocation.pl.bat When I try this I get an error that perl.exe is not a valid win32 program. Any help would be appreciated.

    The .bat Windows batch file will not run with \perl\bin\perl.exe. You'll need to run it by itself:

    C:\> relocation.pl.bat

    I've installed Strawberry from ZIP with no issues. However, I also did it with the MSI first. The issue you may face is by not using the MSI, your PATH won't be updated, your PATHEXT won't be updated, PL files won't be associated with perl and Windows won't be able to find your installation of Perl.

    After my first MSI install, I move the c:\strawberry folder to c:\strawberry-5.min.version.ext where it reflects the Perl version and type (e.g., strawberry_5.18.1-MSWin32-x64-multi-thread). Then I use junction.exe or mklink command to create a junction from c:\strawberry to the actual directory. Now I can install the ZIP versions of any and all Perl's I want in similar c:\strawberry-5.min.version.ext directories and just change the junction and perl.exe and PATH are always found and accurate.

    It's a sort of home grown 'perlbrew' for Windows.

      Thank you for the quick replies. My error was I was using the wrong .zip file. I forgot my system was 32 bit. After using the correct file, unzipping into a directory and running the relocation.pl.bat and update_env.pl.bat scripts got everything working nicely. The .msi is a nicer way to go but I am integrating it as part of a larger scriptable toolset. Thanks again. <\p>

    BTW, why don't you use the MSI installer?

    try the portable edition, indeed. launch the portablesell.bat and you have a full Perl (+ strawberry goodies..) at your disposal.

      Hello Discipulus. I also have the same concern as the original poster, and I can tell you why I dont want to use the msi. Our tiny company has its employees connected via a simple Cloud drive (in this case, Copy.com). I want to install Strawberry into the Copy.com folder storage and am hoping that - presto! - my employees now all have access to it. I realize that their Windows paths (on their pc's) will not be updated, etc. - but that is no problem (I think) because the perl scripts will be called from other (master) software that they are already using. So I am planning to just have that master software itself know the correct path to perl. Will this work? Thanks! Dean

        I don't understand why your approach of storing the file on a file share wouldn't work with the MSI install. Is it a limitation of the MSI installer or your cloud drive host?
