My choice, but the real problem is how to frown

(unfortunately putting the colon after the paren looks strange ):

(and it doesn't get better with an extra dash )-:

Or am I wrong? ;)

Frowns in parenthetical usage? Why not:

    • (   :<(   )
      ...or
    •      .  .
             ̑
            ...or

    •             —   :-(   —
                  ...among other possibilities?
      > Why not ...

      ( psst ... compatibility! ;)

FWIW a Russian friend once send me many "serious" mails full of unbalanced parentheses "noise", till I understood that smileys have neither eyes nor nose over there! )

In the end its a question of habit and standards.
