Scoping out Zope

aijin has asked for the wisdom of the Perl Monks concerning the following question:

I'm in the planning stages of a new site, and I figured I'd try out a content management system type thing for a change. I checked out www.zope.org a couple of days ago and was pleasantly surprised to find that Zope now supports Perl scripts.

Have any of you monks had any experiences with Zope? I'm planning on trying it out over the weekend, and I'll be reporting back on it's performance/ease-of-use, but I'd still love to hear how you found it.

Zope used to be utterly useless for content management. It didn't provide any of the things that I think when I hear content management: workflow, versioning, good templating, scheduled publication, etc. They've been working on some new stuff in that area, which may improve the situation. As for Perl support, I'd stay away. If the core is written in Python, there must be some glue to get Perl code to work and that will slow it down, plus it will still need to run Python which will give memory overhead from both interpreters, and it's probably not as stable as the Python interface... It just sounds like a bad idea.	[reply]

i've used zope a little on some personal projects. nothing too complicated since at the time it didn't support perl and i didn't (and still don't) know enough python to really rip into its guts. the learning curve is pretty steep but it's probably well worth it. in my job i find myself writing mini-content management systems quite often and always thinking about taking some time and writing a more general CM or application framework to save myself work down the road. with zope's support of perl i may not have to do that. i'd still like to see better XML support, in particular, zope would be about perfect if it supported XSLT like cocoon or axkit. anyway, i'm curious to hear from anyone who's used the perl functionality in zope as to how good it is. is it really full support or are there serious limitations? anders pearson	[reply]
