I see this error on 5.12.2 also.
diagnostics:
(F) Only hard references are allowed by "strict refs". Symbolic references are disallowed. See perlref.
I tried looking for something in http://perldoc.perl.org/index-history.html, but no luck. ~~This might be related: strictures and dereferencing in defined()~~
I doubt there is a setting to change this behavior.
