Perlmonks on a handheld, what could be better? Not much. I've almost reached my goal too.

The secret lies in displaytype=raw. For those who don't know, add this to the URL, and it cuts out a lot of information. One thing is missing though.

You can't follow links through there and get raw nodes. First of all because the code behind the site doesn't insert &displaytype=raw into the links. And second, because viewing posts in raw mode seems to sprout an error. This has been mentioned before in DisplayType Raw and doesn't appear to be fixed. I would love to see this fixed, because, well, who wouldn't want to be able to view perlmonks on the run without downloading so much info.

So there's my tangent, what do my fellow monks think?

You can also create a new user, mobile_elusion, that is configured to have no nodelets. This setting will get preserved when you follow links. Then we could add a User Settings option to disable the masthead and top menu and you'd have what you need while probably requiring less work from the developers. (:

I had thought about that, but figured it would be more work. Guess I was wrong. I do have a mobile account that cuts out nodelets.

One other feature I thought might be nice would be to configure which options you wanted to see on newest nodes, that would make a better download page because it doesn't contain the node text, so you're not downloading a node twice. But that could be even more work. Just some ideas, but I would like to see something happen to make downloading better.

...and crazyinsomniac asks me to ask you to not hold your breath. (: Most new features are rather low on the list of priorities and the development process has not "found its stride" yet so even minor changes are more work to implement than you might expect.

I will make a version of each of the "interesting" parts of PM in a Palm-sized form-factor, and stick them on the Plucker website. It's much better than AvantGo for several reasons. If you haven't installed Plucker yet, you should check it out.

        Stay tuned!
