Ok, now for the bad news, ODBC gives the same result, (do ODBC and DBD::Firebird use the same driver?):

So maybe I need to back up a version!!

I'll try Firebird 2.1 next.

But they share common code from DBI. Perhaps you should post your problem on the dbi-users mailing list.
