I use what is easier to spot when I'm glancing at code. This:

$hash->{thing};
[download]

is easier to see at a glance than:

$$hash{thing};
[download]

Likewise, I find:

%{$hash};
[download]

easier to understand in a quick pass than:

%$hash
[download]
