There is no leftward list operator - just an ambiguity in the documentation. I suppose the problem with documentation stating the obvious is that the reader is inclined to look for a mystical or revolutionary interpretation instead! ("that plain old apple pie over there must be really special, or it would not be worth documenting. Maybe it comes from an alien planet...").
