In the old ages of MS-DOS, I would have said that you forgot to load ANSI.SYS. It seems that Windows 8.1 can switch off interpreting ANSI sequences, or does not support them natively. https://www.liferay.com/de/web/igor.spasic/blog/-/blogs/enable-ansi-colors-in-windows-command-prompt (and others) suggests that you need third party software to enable ANSI sequences.

It seems that Windows 8.1 can switch off interpreting ANSI sequences, or does not support them natively. CMD.EXE doesn't support ANSI sequences natively; but that's what Win23::Console::ANSI does. It converts ANSI sequences into SetConsoleTextAttribute() and similar calls. With the rise and rise of 'Social' network sites: 'Computers are making people easier to use everyday' Examine what is said, not who speaks -- Silence betokens consent -- Love the truth but pardon error. "Science is about questioning the status quo. Questioning authority". I knew I was on the right track :) In the absence of evidence, opinion is indistinguishable from prejudice. I'm with torvalds on this Agile (and TDD) debunked I told'em LLVM was the way to go. But did they listen!	[reply]
