me too i made this mistake, but is not strange. If the OP is still interested on the 'functional' in perl i suggest to read: Perl's functional features compared with Ruby Simulating Perl6 Meta/Hyper operators with pure Functional Programming Functional programming ? Your same misterming is present here and there in the monastery, like Is it ok to mix functional and oo programming in one package? L* There are no rules, there are no thumbs..
