    You are being very fortunate in getting a descriptive error, telling you what went awry:

    You wrote a programme expecting 4 bind variables. Then you supplied 8 instead. You're programme wants you to help.

    This does not exactly fit the description in the op where 5 of them were used. But still, you went wrong when you split on blank spaces ending up with more variables than you needed. A fix to use unpack instead of split has in the mean time been suggested by poj in Re: how to store text file information into my sql database.
