Looks like you are running into This bug in DBD::mysql.

There is a patch attached to that bug report.

This is not an optical illusion, it just looks like one.

Ooh well spotted! The patch worked just fine... unfortunately for me, this means I have to continue using this tatty old server for testing :-} No idea how the testing is supposed to be valid when this server is nothing like the modern, sexy and shiny Prod. servers but there you go.
