Re: how to read a 2 dim-array

    OK Gary, here's some help that might get you started.

    • To open a file you use the open function.
    • To read data from a file a record at a time, you use the <FILEHANDLE> operator.
    • To split a record into individual fields you probably want the split function.
    • To learn about creating complex data structures you should read the perlreftut and perldsc manual pages.
    • The definitive list of good Perl books is in perlfaq2.

    Hope this helps.

    p.s. As this is my 1000th post to the Monastery, I'd just like to take this opportunity to thank Larry, my family, my friends, london.pm, all the Perlmonks and everyone else who's ever met me for making it all so much fun :)

    p.p.s. And an especially big thank you to the unknown lecturer from the University of London who is sending such interesting questions to us!

    When you previewed that posting, did you see the text that said:

    If something looked unlike you expected it to you might need to check out Writeup Formatting Tips

    Only, I'm guessing that this didn't look like you expected it to (judging by what I saw when I looked at the source). But you decided to press ahead anyway and let us make the effort to understand what it was supposed to look like.

    You'll get much more help if you make it as easy as possible for us to understand your problem.

    Oh, and that post had nothing to do with Perl. That code looks more like Pascal to me.

    Please do not feed the trolls.

    update: Just so people know, the post was badly formatted and looked a lot more like a troll when I first posted this...

      Feed the trolls! Save the billy goats!!

      $japh->{'Caillte'} = $me;

      I dunno, they are not so much trolls as... automatons... *ba-dump-bump-CHING!* Thank you and good night!
