Anonymous Monk has asked for the wisdom of the Perl Monks concerning the following question:

Hi Monks,

My harddisk is crashed some days ago and I lost my source code of my application but having the exe which compiled with PerlAPP version 9.2.

Can you give me some help to decompiled it or recover it from *.exe?

Thanks in advance

You can try Super Search for PerlApp - there are many threads on how to recover the original source code from various versions of it.

This should be a lesson; start putting your source code into a repository of some sort. Learn what revision control is, and how to use git or hg (Mercurial) and sign up for a free account on Github or BitBucket.

If your software is proprietary, you'll have to pay a small fee to use such a site, otherwise, set up a server internal to you.

There are many other revision control systems available, but those two (particularly git/github) are widely used and reliable.

Yes, I can avoid this in future

But now I need a source code for my application

Is there any chance for it?

I followed the recommendation from Corion and found this node Help recovering some source code from activestate perlapp 5.3.0 that has a bunch of what appear to be useful links. I had the same problem many years ago and wound up giving up and recovered most of my source code another way. This is a bummer of a problem and wish you luck! I lost 3 HD's in a once in a 100 year power event, even had actual smoke! Luckily nothing aside from the computers actually burned. Multiple copies locally on multiple computers may not save you - backup needs to be off site.

Did you read the other comments that state exactly where to look?

    Sure, activestate, makers of perlapp
