While i can reconstruct your result, i fear it is not for the cause you describe. it is the "next unless.." that is skipping john when there is no "enter" after john. print $line before that test to see.

I dont get it, unless \s+ is matching \n when it is there, and the "match" fails when it is missing.

    In any event, you are correct. This is a regex issue.
