I'll caution, you, though, that the relevant code node, handle_threaded_nodes, is a very complicated mess, the evil handiwork of one of my predecessors, demerphq, and probably the stereotype of code which underlies this site's reputation for being difficult to maintain. After you beat your head against it for a while, you might decide to write a new view from scratch.

(I also used some JS in a nodelet hack to fold other rarely used stuff away to be able to expand it only on demand)

This way for me the design become clearer and better usable with mobiles.
