Ah, of course, the qr operator actually compiles the regex so it makes sense they get their own modifiers. And I never would have figured out the || operator throwing into scalar. Perfect. Thanks so much.

$PM = "Perl Monk's";
$MCF = "Most Clueless Friar Abbot Bishop Pontiff Deacon Curate";
$nysus = $PM . ' ' . $MCF;
