Microcebus has asked for the wisdom of the Perl Monks concerning the following question:

Dear wise Monks,

I want to publish a bioinformatics Perl script that requires one module which is not in core, namely LWP::Simple. I know that this module is now included in Strawberry Perl (running cpan -a) but is it possible to figure out since when (version or date)? In the release notes I can only see whats on top of the old Perl version.

I simply want to tell people that they will not have to install anything manually when they use Strawberry Perl x.x.x / Active State Perl x.x.x / Ubuntu x.x.x or Mac OS x.x.x.

Thanks alot for your assistance!

    Sounds like a good opportunity to publish your app on cpan that way regardless of OS, Perl version/vendor users could install it and the dependencies by something like:

    cpan App::MicrocebusCoolAppNameHere

    The corelist command shows when a module first became core, and you can also find out which version of the module came with which perl:

    I'm unaware of a similar method for finding out what additional modules come with different perl distributions, likely you'd have to trawl through lots of documentation/history, and this isn't practical. Be aware that some OS also ship cut down versions of perl, without certain modules, another good reason for managing dependencies via a cpan release.

    The oldest release notes I can find in Releases are for 5.8.9.2. That version already included libwww-perl.

    To hook into marto's post a bit - by publishing your application as a modulepackage, you can specify required modules that will be pulled in at installation time.
