Ack! I tried to vote on the Caffiene thing, this being near and dear to my heart, but it said my IP number had already voted, and gave the IP number of our company gateway which probably serves >5k users!

I realize voting is a fun thing, and visitors to PM not logged in should be able to vote by IP number, but perhaps somebody logged in should have their vote recorded by username (instead of IP). I guess somebody could still vote twice by having two logins, but that seems like a hard way to bias the results.

A simple search for "voting ip" or a more sophisticated Super Search would have turned up a very recent thread on this exact subject.

The main problem I see with allowing "poll" votes by login is that it makes it easier for the average monk to vote twice: once logged in and then once not logged in for their IP address.

But since we have our first real complaint (at least I think the previous cases were "predictions of complaints"), perhaps it will soon be time (after "apply/undo patches" gets crossed off the to-do list) to switch to the method you suggest. (:
