It may sound like a minor complaint and I'm sure it's been mentioned before, but it would be nice if more people would use READMORE tags in their posts. I like to see the messages at a glance and see if anything catches my interest.

When huge nodes get front-paged, it makes it a pain to get to the nodes listed below them scrolling through a hundred lines of code.

Perhaps a user setting that will truncate these posts at a preset character limit and automatically generate a READMORE link?

Editors can add READMORE tags when it's appropriate; if you believe that a node should be edited to include that, just use the appropriate nodelet and let us know that via ntc

It's not what you know, but knowing how to find it if you don't know that's important

I didn't even think of that. The only time I've bothered the editors when I typoed the readmore tag myself and had it fixed.

On the other hand, it would be easier for everybody if people just did it in the first place.

I agree that people should use READMORE tags on long posts. If you have something interesting to say, a well placed  <READMORE>  can be used to effectively pique the readers interest. If one can't be placed effectively, then it's probably not interesting enough to post.

You're right, this has been suggested before (or at least something like it). After reading your post, though, I thought of a slightly different suggestion that might achieve the same effect: having a "low bandwidth" version of the Gates (or maybe an option in the user settings to cut off posts automatically)? Might be something to do for the weekend...

Yes I agree, also I would like to add that the use of correct subject line would help. Would be nice to see posts and for example have links to 5 last replies. Just my 5 cents...
Good point. Providing a good subject line is something that gets ignored a lot. Many are lacking. (Plus different people tend to quantify things differently.)
