Further to davies's post:   See  (?adlupimsx-imsx) and  (?^alupimsx) in Extended Patterns. See also Regex: Embedded pattern-match modifiers: Empty (?) modifier. Don't use eval unless you need something like a  /g modifier (but don't do that).
