Hello esteemed colleagues,

Today MemSQL has released a free tier version for databases under 128 GB.

I would love to try this out, but haven't been able to find a DBI driver for MemSQL on CPAN.

MemSQL claims to be wire-compatible with MySQL, so it's possible the MySQL driver will work out of the box, but I haven't tried it yet.

If it doesn't work, I may try my hand at writing a driver or shim layer over the MySQL driver.

Have any of you been using the paid version with Perl already?

    Hi all,

    I can confirm that MemSQL does indeed work with DBD::mysql out of the box.

    The only trick is using host=127.0.0.1 in your DSN to force a TCP connection instead of trying to connect via Unix socket.

        For my use case, I require extremely high write throughput but don't care much about durability. I also require indexing for fast queries.

        I've been using Redis with RediSearch, but I've always desired real SQL queries.

        In general, as RAM becomes cheaper and acceptable server response time shrinks, I think we will trend toward in-memory databases. MongoDB for example has an in-memory storage engine you can purchase. I do like MongoDB and Redis, but when you are dealing with relational data SQL is really the best fit IMHO.
