I think Larry's mantra -- that it's "officially OK" to speak/write in a subset of Perl -- applies equally well in your case. The fact that Perl is useful in so many environments means that many different people with different backgrounds get drawn to it.

Just as they may or may not use different subsets of the language, they have different sets of interests that map onto/around/etc the reasons they like/use perl. Hence when anything gets written about Perl, be it 5.6.1 or Perl6, it's likely that only a portion of the community will either a) grasp it or b) be interested in it.

So at least from my corner, I'd consider your point of view to be "unofficially OK" (since I certainly don't have the authority to declare anything officially :) )
