Perl once again less dead than Ruby

Comparing perl to Ruby it seems perl will have the last laugh as it plagues the planet and refuses to die. Ruby is down over 50% year-over-end, and now accounts for less market share than Perl on TIOBE. It's also falling at a faster rate. It's only a matter of time before all the 1.upTo(10) will get rewritten again as a for loop like K&R and all the other gods (including Jesus) have intended.

It actually makes perfect sense. It's basically a lateral step from Perl but without the shell, command line, or procedural scripting strengths. Even if it were a better language on some levels as many I know and respect believe, it would be hard pressed to find itself doing anything but floundering the node.js, big-data python, legacy Perl era. I really enjoy using ruby for devops stuff, and building things in it when the time is right. I think the data processing things it does well are much cleaner than in perl, but frankly you are going to be really hard pressed to find something as elegant, simple and powerful as the ability to traverse and construct nested data structures perl affords you Three thousand years of beautiful tradition, from Moses to Sandy Koufax, you're god damn right I'm living in the fucking past	[reply]
