    Since you are new here, a few tips:

    So Having said all of that, perhaps something like this will help you get started

    use strict; use warnings; our $TEXTFILE="/some/path/file.ext"; open(TEXTFILE) || die "Failed to open $TEXTFILE:$!"; local $/; my $text=<TEXTFILE>; # Slurp the whole file into one string print "Matched!" if $text=~/match/;
    Now if that didnt help then perhaps you need to think about what additional information you might need to provide us with to help us to help you.

    Also you might try the following and see if it provides you with the information you need:

    perldoc perlretut perldoc perlopentut perldoc perlre perldoc perlop perldoc perlvar

      I don't have anything to add, but the mere ++ vote felt like too little commendation on a great novice introduction. :)
