The CPAN links are great, and I use them often. Unfortunately, http://search.cpan.org/ is awfully slow. Would people be up for changing these links to point at the old standby, http://theoryx5.uwinnipeg.ca/CPAN/cpan-search.html instead?

    Truth be told, the periodic problems with cpan.org are what led to the addition of the [kobe://] tag, which does pretty much what you asked for. It behaves like the [cpan://] tag only it triggers a search on the University of Winnipeg's mirror instead.

    I chose to use a separate tag in hopes that cpan.org would eventually get things worked out. Until then, I've been trying to post links like this:

    Perhaps MIME::Lite (alt) would help.

    FWIW, the [kobe://] tag was announced in this node, along with a few others. (And, yes, the documentation has recently been updated.)

    --f

    P.S. Yes, the guy's name is Kobes. There was an accident involving email and a pair of editorial scissors. Shouldn't have run with them. Sorry.)

    P.P.S. I'm a bit surprised no one mentioned it earlier in the thread. What's up with that?

      Thanks, I didn't know about this tag (and apparently most others didn't either). I think it would still be better to change the link in the CPAN:// tag until that search gets faster. I mean, that's the whole point of these abstractions, right? It can always be changed back.

    I don't like either of the 3 sugguested. I want all my cpan links to go to my local mirror, so here it is, a beconing call for pmdevers, to create some kind of mechanism, that either decides based on a users timezone, a local cpan mirror, or lets the user choose from a list of cpan mirrors (the setting probably located in user settings).

    update: oh, well there's other mirrors that allow searching right? then for the pmdevers, scratch option 1, go for 2, I becon you.

    Disclaimer: Don't blame. It came from inside the void

    perl -e "$q=$_;map({chr unpack qq;H*;,$_}split(q;;,q*H*));print;$q/$q;"

      But the mirrors are for downloads only. I want the links to go to a place where I can read the documentation and learn about a module without installing it, which is that these search engines let you do.

    Until a couple of months ago there was a site called cpan2 which acted like a fast and enhanced mirror of search.cpan.org.

    However, it seems to have died now. Here is a news release about it.

    At YAPC::EU Brian Ingerson was talking about his plan for NAPC a type of Napster for CPAN. I don't know if there has been any work done on it however.

    I would use kobesearch.cpan.org instead (as it is listed on www.cpan.org). It allows for failover and is more informative.

    UPDATE: I am aware that the two are the same. Reread the text above; I cannot think of a simjpler way to phrase it.
