Get a copy of Code Complete by Steve McConnell and start reading up on structured programming. Learn about how to create functions and use them effectively. The difference between what you can do in straight-line thinking like you have now, and good structured programming, is staggering.

    This tends to be more obvious in a language that makes it more difficult to write straight line code. Pascal for example, is a language that tends to push my thoughts into 'routine' mode, since you have to write routine style. Ditto c, where you have to declare a 'main' routine.
