Directly from Programming Perl:
splice ARRAY [OFFSET [LENGTH [LIST]]]

What does that mean? Well, ARRAY and LIST are arrays. OFFSET and LENGTH are numbers. 'how about this' isn't a number, so splice doesn't know what to do with it.
