Recently, the biggest problem I've noticed is that the ad
banners have often been slow to load. When using NetScape,
this can cause the entire page to be slow to appear. That
still doesn't sound like it is enough to explain your
problem, however.
I've also heard reports from others about intermediate
network nodes causing delays and lost packets. I suspect
this is the main source of your problem. Try using
traceroute (if you've got it, aka tracert under Win32) to
www.perlmonks.org and see if there is a spot where the
round-trip time sometimes jumps up or you start seeing
packet loss.
If the problem is close enough to you, then you might be
able to complain to your ISP (or just change ISPs). If it
is more in the middle, then someone else is probably already
complaining and the problem will probably get resolve itself
in a week or two (either by fixing the problem or people
routing around it).
Also, the site continues to get busier. Lately that means
(to me and assuming that these times are not mostly due to
network problems, which they don't appear to be, but I
haven't tried to prove that) that it often takes several
seconds to display a page, especially a complex page like
Newest Nodes. But I doubt this has much to do with your
problem and only mention it for the sake of completeness. (:

Whatever the technical detail of what's preciptiating a particular outage, the root problem is almost certainly that Perlmonks is such a great site it gets a lot of use. Well, as we know, Perl is optimised for developer time rather than CPU, memory or anything else... so the solution to that problem is
$RAM->buy('more');
... and how can this happen? Why, by monks following this link.

The site does seem generally more sluggish to me.
Several times when I logged in I let it spin for
1.5 minutes. Then I clicked Stop and tried logging in
and it loaded in about 5-10 seconds. The pages
are generally taking long enough that I tend to
open another browser tab to surf another page while
things load. At the moment, however, the site is
responding okay.

If you're logged in, you get bandwidth assigned to you by your level. Us saints can't have you lesser ranked monks wasting our time. | [reply] |

I can concur with Tye in saying that the problem is
most likely because you are using NS and access to the site
where the banner ads are stored experiences problems
(bandwidth or otherwise) from time to time. You can
confirm this easily by clicking the stop button after
loading a page before allowing it to time out (be sure to
wait at least 8-10 seconds). My guess is that the entire
page will show up except for the banner ad. Granted,
unusual things happen occasionally at PM but those are rare
in my experience.
I have found that IE 6+ does not behave the same way
(due to a caching strategy perhaps), but then I don't
like IE and have decided to live with the occasional
glitches. Either that or begrudgingly use IE temporarily.

Well...I've never had the site timeout on me but it does seem to take longer to laod than any other site I visit on a regular basis.
At first I thought it was the banner ads but when I visit: http://216.200.201.212/~adfu/servfu.pl?l,perlmonks,3809
(which appears to be the layer src for the banner here) it loads very fast. I suspect the problem is just that theses pages are all 100% dynamic and the server requires more memory...mod_perl likes to eat RAM ;-) | [reply] |

Mine does not time out. It does take awhile to bring up
links, but I am guessing that that is because this whole
page is written in perl. nothing static. Very server
intensive. but that wouldn't cause your timeouts. If that
were the case, then everybody would be getting timeouts.
and it would be worse when more people are on it.

Maybe its a mod_perl issue. OH my god, did I just utter those words. Please don't banish me from the monistary Gates for uttering one of the scariest words to any true perl coder. If you are like me, that like module has kept you up many nights righting code that is so insanely tight just to gain a few secs to the end user's "experience". Hahah | [reply] |
