in reply to Get your mugs right here

That's just what I wanted to cheer me up after a grim day, and I have placed an order - thanks to all. BUT: the only thing I want more than a Perlmonks mug is a Perlmonks mouse mat. I want it *almost* enough to do something about getting some designed / produced. Is there any further interest from sibling monks, which might tip me over the edge and into action?

    "A mouse, how quaint".

I've not used a mouse on any computer I've ever owned. {grin} I guess I find trackpads to be a lot more convenient.

You must not play any online computer games; any player with a trackball would get completely destroyed. ;) Thats not to say that I use a mousepad myself; a quality laser mouse is very necessary for any type of game requiring speed (such as Starcraft/Counterstrike/Quake/etc). For instance, try either of the Reaction games (reaction 1 is for rts, reaction 2 is for fps) at http://www.missionred.com with a trackball, and then try again with a laser mouse. HUGE difference. I would never trade the speed and accuracy of my laser for anything... but feel free to play against me using whatever you want :)

Is a laser mouse a new innovation or is it just a wrong name for an optical mouse? (They use LEDs, that just aren't lasers).

Anyway, I don't use a mouse, I don't use a trackball or glidepoint. My favorite pointing device is the Wacom Graphire. I also use a small joystick-like thingy for when I only need to change focus (Don't wanna pick up the pen, point and drop the pen just to tell my machine I want another xterm :).
Yes, my system does have a mouse. It's just for visitors :) (Just like the non-split keyboard)

As for games, what do games have to do with computers? :)

I have been a trackball user since the very beginning and played from quake on with a trackball and i have since given up playing online games but when i used to play tribes and the early versions of CS i used to OWN with my trackball...and yes i've used a laser mouse just give me my logitech trackball anyday.
      I use to say:
My favourite mouse has 102 buttons - and doesn't move

So all it would take is a little interest to put you over the edge, George? Consider me piqued!
