This has probably been debated at one point or another, but when submitting a new post/comment, why is it necessary to have my signature appear within the initial comment box? Maybe I am off-base, but I thought the entire purpose of defining one's signature once in one's profile was to get it out of one's hair, not have it dangling in front of one all the time!

I mean, it's not a big deal or anything... but it would just make more sense to me to not have it show up within the input box.

And if there is worry that some people might want to tailor their sig to fit their post, I suggest it could be inserted after the preview button is pressed, giving one a chance to edit it before submitting the final version.

I use my "signature" as a template for my responses. It contains more than just some static text for the bottom. This isn't usenet or e-mail; all of your nodes have links to your home node where you can put the stuff that you always want to be available to anyone who reads your nodes.

I also like to vary how I end my nodes. I'd hate to have the signature hidden from me until it was too late.

Very good post in favour of "the other side" of the argument. I return to my little corner, humbled :^)

      Agreed.

In fact, I even stash a bunch of HTML/Perlmonk tags in my signature just so I can cut and paste them as I need em.

Not much to add, but I had the same reaction to the signature showing up in the text box. If I want it automatically inserted, why should I have to see it? Ironically, though, I turned it off. I'm kinda tired of signatures for the moment.

Good point... I will probably turn my signature off when I get around to it. Thanks.

Wow.. this comment got a "-1" rep. Somebody must really object to me turning off my own signature :^)
