dead_boLt has asked for the wisdom of the Perl Monks concerning the following question:

I don't have PERL yet....... I've downloaded different versions of it and I cant seem to get them to work. Is there any site that just has ONE download and it gives you all the right files.. you just extract the folder and POOF.. you've got PERL? I hope to god there is.. I'm tired of switching things all around and stuff.. well thanks.

    Given what you're looking to do, it sounds like you're on Windows. Given that, you can either use ActiveState's perl, or you can can use the perl that you get with Cygwin's Unix Tools for Win32. Both are simple installers that include the standard base distributions for using perl as you see fit.

    If you need it on other systems, we'll need more information.

    It's not what you know, but knowing how to find it if you don't know that's important

      If you are on windows, you can also use Indigo Perl. It installs by unzipping into a directory and running a simple config script. It also comes with an apache binary precofigured to run cgi. It's very handy for testing CGIs before you upload them. It has a package manager that is compatible with Active State Packages, too.

      BTW, you probably won't want to use their Apache distro for a production webserver. And in any case, you may want to tweek its configuration a little, the default setup is a little permissive.

    Well we'd all like to help you get Perl installed on your system, but of course, without knowing what platform you're running, or what you've tried so far, we can't offer much worthwhile advice.

    So...what platform are you running?
    Where have you tried to download Perl from?
    What steps have you taken after you downloaded Perl?

    I'll be glad to help once I know more about your specific needs.

    buzzcutbuddha makes a good point. It's difficult to help you if we don't have the details of your system. But, here's a link that should help you out... no matter the system. Check out Downloading the latest Perl... you probably want to go the exact links to get the newest source though. Let us know if you have problems.

    You might want to pick a distribution that fits most of your needs from Outside links, eg. for which platform, bundled with apache or not , bundled with (nonstandard or additional) modules or not.
    If you find some more in your search that would be interesting so let us know, they might be added there as well :-)

    hi, i would suggest physically removing all the files related to the perl installations you've tried so far before giving it one more go...trying to install a valid download over an already-present corrupt installation might just be making things worse...try starting with a clean slate ,using a download from one of the sites the others have mentioned...

    As other have asked, "What platform are you on?"

    I'd also like to ask: Why do you think it is broken?

    <nitpick> Perl is the language, perl is the interpreter. There is no PERL.
    (but read about Acme::Inline::PERL)
