    I would suggest using the qq(...) quoting construct - you might have to go back to perldoc to see more examples, but it works generally like this:

    print qq(DATE\t "$1-$2-$3"\n);

    The beauty of this is that now single/double quote characters are allowed in your expression without backslashing them.
