vandana has asked for the wisdom of the Perl Monks concerning the following question:

Hi everyone. I wanted to find out 1. what is a .pf extension ? 2. what/where is it used for ? 3. does it require to have a .pl file also written ? Thanks in advance. Regards, Vandana.

    File extensions are not always as meaningful as Windows would have you believe. :) But, here are a few relevant docs I found from a simple Google search:

    PROCGI - the .pf file is a configuration file used by this old, scary CGI toolkit for Progress databases.

    filext.com has a few entries for .pf as well. (Looks like a Macintosh thing used by Aladdin Systems software).

    • From www.icdatamaster.com:
    PF= Progress Parameter File PF= Aladdin Systems security software : Private File PF= Archive PF= Monitor or Printer Profile File PF= ICC Profile: Windows ICM profile

    What is the source of this .pf file? Is it something you saw written down? I only ask because I had a headhunter ask me long ago about my experience with VAX systems and whether or not I knew DELNET.

    Of course, he was referring to DECNET -- he'd written it down wrong and wasn't that knowledgeable about the Digital Equipment Corporation systems (since absorbed by Compaq).

    If you have some .pf files, post them and we'll all gather around (no pushing, now, there's plenty of space) and see what we can see.

    I am answering this question as if quite newbie with perl. If you are not, please pardon this somewhat paternalistic post and do not take it as an attack. I'm just trying to help.

    I came across some *.pf files recently that turned out to be "perl files".

    Take a look at the beginning of the .pf files and look to see if they start with:
    #!/<some path>/perl
    or something similar. If they are, these are perl files with a different name
    hackmare.

    I may be way off base, and I hope my other monks would correct my ignorance if I am wrong, but I vaguely recall once reading somewhere that a .pf extension was the old standard for Perl files, that was then changed to .pl.
