Darn. I think I got my wires crossed in the previous post. I was referring to MD5 crypt, which is designed to be slow. In that link, they state that "MD5 crypt hashes the password and salt in a number of different combinations to slow down the evaluation speed."

Of course, just generating a simple MD5 hash doesn't have this issue. I had the right answer, but for the wrong question :(
