how to install CPAN module?

benlaw has asked for the wisdom of the Perl Monks concerning the following question:

hi all!i go to install the module in my win32 Audio:Play:MPG123

C:\>ppm install Audio:Play:MPG123
Installing package 'Audio:Play:MPG123'...
Error installing package 'Audio:Play:MPG123': Could not locate a PPD f
+ile for package Audio:Play:MPG123
[download]

i try to d/l the module tar from CPAN , then perl makefile.pl
then , i type both make and nmake are bad command and file name ...?! i get no idea..

There is an outside possibility that someone has prepared a PPD for the module that can be found at some other repository - you will need to read the PPM manpage to find out how to use a different repository than that of Activestate. Then you will have to find the PPD :) If the module is a pure perl one (i.e it does not require a C compiler to build) then you should be able to build it if you obtain nmake from Microsoft /J\	[reply]

ppm and CPAN aren't the same thing. to install the ppm, you'd do a ppm install Audio-Play-MPG123 Also, from looking at the spec for the module (located here) it only runs on Linux and Solaris.	[reply]

If you really want to install it on a Windows machine anyways, you might try to install it under Cygwin. It is possible to run your own X Server on Cygwin, so I can't imagine what isn't possible if you really try. :) Beware though, that Cygwin comes with it's own environment, it's own perl and all, so you are most probably constricted to within that environment with this. And speaking from experience, having several perl environments on your computer can be confusing at best - although they do not clash unless you make them. Under Cygwin, you can do the "`perl Makefile.PL, make, make test, make install`" like you expect, or simply use "`perl -MCPAN -e 'install <Module>'`" on the commandline.	[reply]
