Anonymous Monk has asked for the wisdom of the Perl Monks concerning the following question:

We are running Solaris 5.8 (SPARC) and have Perl 5.00503 pre-installed as part of the OS. I am developing some FTP scripts and plan to use the Net::FTP module (part of libnet , I believe). It would really help if someone could share their experience in installing libnet 1.x on Solaris 5.8. Also, which version of libnet (Net::FTP) is recommended for Solaris 8 (SPARC) ? I know that this ground work should be done by the system admin, however, I have to do this research and make recommendations to the sys admin, who in turn will be doing the installation. Thanks in advance.

I've run libnet 1.0703 on Solaris 5.6 and perl 5.05003 for a couple of years with no problems, but I wouldn't worry about using a more recent version. As to installation, it's just perl Makefile.pl, make test, make install.

I've also run libnet 1.0703 against Solaris 8 for SPARC against perl 5.005_03.
Installation was simple as petral states and without problem. The latest version I have used recently is libnet 1.0901 and this installed without hitch against perl 5.6.1 on Solaris 8.
