How I connect through a proxy using perl

mathiae has asked for the wisdom of the Perl Monks concerning the following question:

In programming with perl module (O'Reilly book from Erik Olson, page 189-190) there is no complete exemple how to use the proxy and authorization basic method.

I have tried to connect by using these methods without success. I would like to know if someone can give me a complete example
