"You can set it to any time zone that does mean anything to you.."

Almost true. Very close. But if I'm not misinformed, there is one timezone somewhere in the middle of Australia that has an offset of 30 minutes. (I'm sure an AussiMonk will chime in with the details.)

Not that this is in any way invalidates the basic information in your post. "User settings" is the way to go. ;-)

Everything will go worng!

There are a few places that have chosen to do this. Besides Central Australia there is also Suriname, Iran, India, Sri Lanka, and Newfoundland.

Update: changed "New Foundland" to "Newfoundland." Thanks to demerphq

    Yep, like this AussieMonk :-)

I suffer from the curse of the half-hour offset timezone. I'm currently dawdling along in the 4th dimension at +10.5 hours from GMT.

It's not just my American brethren that get this wrong though. I have equipment that was made here in Australia only a couple of thousand kilometers away (Sydney) and they are too shortsighted to put in a timezone that works in the next state.

I beleive there is a little country somewhere that has an offset that has a 45 minute component. That's rough.

At any rate, even with the time at the top showing localtime (well, close) I still think a time elapsed is a useful thing.

Yep, Nepal is 5 hours, 45 minutes ahead of GMT. Just to be different, I guess? :) TMTOWTDI.
