in reply to code wrap length default too low

The code wrap length can be easily changed in your user settings. You should also consider that people view the site at many different resolutions with different text sizes. In my opinion, it's far better to have the code wrap then to expand the tables off the side of their screen. This is especially the case when a single node that you weren't even reading ends up messing up an entire page, as I'm sure we've all seen happen to the Monastery Gates before.

It usually seems to be widths much greater than 80 characters which cause that.   (I guess it would be 80 char resolutions/text sizes that would benefit from 70 over 80, like lynx on a text terminal or something.)

I'd have to agree that it's just easier to alter your user settings than changing the default for everyone. I personally like 70 right where it's at, as I come to this site from about five different computers, featuring resolutions from 1152x768 to 800x600 (laptop, and it's not even an active matrix screen, ugh).

I turned off wrap for awhile and it screwed up the Monastery Gates consistantly, I couldn't figure out what the heck was going on for some time - 70 seems like a great default.
