The easiest way is to `use re 'debug';` You'll find that and much more under "Debugging regular expressions" in perldebguts. perl -pe '"I lo`+$^X$\"$]!$/"=~m%(.)%s;$_=$1;y^`+*^e v^#$&V"+@( NO CARRIER'	[reply] [d/l]
