A couple of quick points:

• Save uppercase functions for constants
• You don't have to declare you variables at the top of a function. Declare them where you need them
• use strict and warnings
• Use ++ and += to simplify
• Don't use backticks in a void context
• You can do a delete @hash{qw(key1 key2 key3)}
• foreach my $var (@list)
