Says who? I thought one of the key elements of Open Source was giving back to the community. Wouldn't that include compensation to the site/community that helped you?

It seems that the open source community often likes to
dictate the terms of compensation rather than accept
a gift freely given (GPL vs Artistic comes to mind).
I'm much more inclined to reward someone who aided
me without thought of compensation than someone who
had his hand out from the start.
