Elliott has asked for the wisdom of the Perl Monks concerning the following question:

Brethren, It's easy enough to parse an Excel spreadsheet if it's been saved as a tab-delimited file - but anyone know of a script (module, maybe) that can read one in XLS format? Or perhaps I am being too soft on users who are too stupid to understand hwo to save a tab-delimited version!!! May the Great Coder watch over you.

Search on CPAN. You'll find Spreadsheet::ParseExcel. (I've never tried it).

If you are on a Win32 System, there is a new, handy-dandy tutorial in the tutorials section on just this subject. Otherwise I recommend taking lshatzer advice above regarding Spreadsheet::ParseExcel.

    C-.

Update: Thanks lshatzer, I'm slow on the draw today. Distracted I guess.

You're going to want a module for that. Take a look at search.cpan.org, and look for "Excel" to get started.

You could also find xls2cvs program useful.
