Think of the intelligence of your target users as a bell curve. The length of the right of the bell curve is your unrealistic optimism. The size of the middle of the curve is your salesman's unrealistic optimism. The size of the left of the curve is your support department's nightmare and the only accurate part of this picture.

    Yikes. (Was this thread started just to provoke? Probably.)

    While there may be some value in thinking about things this way, imagine the business plan distortion, the day to day incremental diversion of constructive action, and the possible 'talking down' to target users that could occur, should this become a mantra for customer interaction at any touchpoint.

      Undercut the presentation and/or product without disrespecting the user (a real risk if this is an in-house attitude),

      Survey users and read the surveys,

      Educate the user and yourselves,

      Repeat.

    Just a thought...
