Simple Port Scanner Prog. In Perl

czarfred has asked for the wisdom of the Perl Monks concerning the following question:

Hullo, For one of my classes, I need to do a simple port scanner in perl (for security only). Can someone point me in the right direction in regards to what modules I should use?? A tutorial on socket programming in perl would be nice too. BTW, I searched the site to no avail. Thanks for all of your help.

Well, you looked on your own, so I feel you should be helped. :) Besides, that was my first foray into perl network programming as well. This seems like a dandy introduction to sockets. In the first few paragraphs it already gives you enough to write your own port scanner. Enjoy, and if we hear that you are doing evil with it... unspecified ominous mumbling :) also, check out the IO::Socket man page! To R&D (Rip off and Duplicate) someone else's hard work have a look at pscan which is a basic perl port scaner. You can Google to your hearts content. But beware, you may be drawn into a dingy and dangerous netherworld where the forces of good/evil strive to upset the delicate balance of M$ omnipotence. You are sitting in a darkened room in a diet Coke induced euphoric haze. Before you sits a 19" TFT screen containing a list of open ports from your latest scan.
